5 Reasons your garage door is noisy

Garage doors are mechanical powerhouses assembled with a truck-load of moving parts. Just like with any other machine, when one part gets misaligned, damaged or broken, the door is prone to be sound strange. Even worse than nails on a chalkboard. But without replacing your door, what can help your door run quieter again? We’ve put together a list of five items we inspect, and fixes we suggest. We want you to know about your home, and to understand how we can help you.

#1 Replace Rollers

A garage door operates with ball-bearing rollers traveling on the track. If a roller is broken, the ball-bearings may have fallen out, or will wiggle around. A broken roller might also be stuck, so it won’t turn. This is a large cause for noise.

#2 Replace Hinges

A standard garage door has hinges between every section. A damaged hinge, or a hinge on the incorrect section, will increase friction as the door travels up and down. Replacing a hinge often will relieve pressure on the door, and help it work more quietly.

#3 Adjust Track

As a garage door travels, its rollers need a little space to slide in and out. If the track is set too tight to the door, the steel track will rub against the door. And metal against metal is never a pleasant sound.

#4 Oil Hardware

Our most important piece of maintenance advice, is that all hinges, rollers, and springs should be oiled at least bi-annually. We recommend using conventional motor oil. Using a spray lubricant will often wear off more quickly. In that case, we suggest oiling the door once every season.

#5 Lubricate Opener Rail

If you have a screw-drive opener, like this model by Genie, there is a little extra maintenance we suggest you take a look at. The garage door is controlled using a threaded metal rod, and if this piece of metal doesn’t have lubrication, not only will it be loud, but it can cause the opener to die prematurely. We suggest using Lubriplate to help out with this.
